For my first print, it felt fitting to go back to where one of my favorite bodies of work began.
Which Way to the Bar, 2023 was the first painting in my Modern Renaissance series—but the idea for it actually began a few years earlier.
During Covid, I was flipping through an old Artist Masterpieces coffee-table book, something I'd done hundreds of times before, when Caravaggio's The Calling of Saint Matthew suddenly struck me in a way it never had. On impulse, I decided to recreate it as a master copy.
It wasn't until I began painting that the drama of the scene really grabbed me. Looking at these figures painted more than 400 years ago, I started thinking: the scenery changes, but people don't. The clothes are different, but these are still the same people we know today—having the same conversations, arguments, petty quarrels and everyday dramas.
So instead of focusing on the biblical narrative, I started making up their conversation in my head. What were these people actually doing?
And suddenly it seemed obvious: this man was simply asking for directions.
Which way to the bar?
And with that, Modern Renaissance was born.
Three years later, I'm incredibly excited to make this painting available as my first limited-edition fine art print. Each is produced on museum-quality fine art paper and available in a small selection of sizes, with both print-only and framed options.
